HUMILITY: A WAY TO THE TOP!

1 Peter 5:6 - “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”

Humility is the act of placing someone or something above yourself. It is not about us - and specifically for followers of Jesus, humility is about remembering that God is God and He is the provider of all things.  “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17).

Think of it this way, a man gets a promotion at work with a raise, better hours, and all kinds of benefits. He starts this new position, and all is going well, but he allows his pride to creep in. Instead of his promotion being built on the fact that God showed him favour and gave him this opportunity, he begins to build it on his hard work and take the glory. He goes around saying, ‘They gave me this promotion because I am the best worker they have, no one does a job as good as me.’

Because of this attitude, he begins to look down on other employees and treat them poorly when their performance is not up to his standards. He forgets how God lifted him. Pride and arrogance see the things God gives us as obligations because we deserve them; however, humility sees the things God gives us as a gift that we use to worship Him and bless others. When we stay humble, we allow the things God gives us to be used for His glory and others’ benefits. To stay humble, remain thankful and be faithful!
