THE POWER OF THE CROSS
1 Corinthians 1:18 - "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us …it is the power of God."
On Good Friday, it is important to remember the power of the cross and the Lord's sacrifice. The cross symbolises God's saving power, allowing anyone to receive forgiveness through Jesus' sacrifice. This forgiveness is available to the worst sinners, making no one beyond the reach of God's saving grace. This truth is echoed in 1 Timothy 1:15, where Apostle Paul speaks about his own transformation. Sin is a persistent force that destroys lives through various evils. However, Christ has cancelled the penalty of sin by nailing it to the cross, setting us free from condemnation and guilt. Through the atonement of His blood, God makes us alive to righteousness. The power of the cross gives us new life, eternal, and abundant, which comes through His Spirit indwelling us. Jesus died so that we might find true and abundant life, experiencing the power of the cross.
John Newton was a man who lived a wicked life, being involved in the horrible practice of slave trading. We call it human trafficking today. Amid a violent storm, when hope was almost lost, as the story goes, John Newton opened his heart to God. As a result, he encountered the transformation that only comes through Christ and the power of the Cross. The story of the abundant life he received as a result, is best expressed through his hymn: “Amazing Grace.” As you embrace this truth today may the power of the cross and the shedding of the blood bring forgiveness and freedom to your life and loved ones.
