THE CAPSTONE OF GRACE
Zechariah 4:7 - "What are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel, you shall become a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone with shouts of 'Grace, grace to it!'"
The above verse is a powerful declaration of God’s grace as symbolised by the capstone. This capstone, representing completion and perfection, is laid with shouts of "Grace, grace to it!" It serves as a vivid reminder of the indispensable role of God’s grace in our lives. Just as the capstone completes and crowns a building, God’s grace is the finishing touch that brings wholeness and fulfilment to our lives. God's grace is essential for enduring life's challenges, as demonstrated in the Bible through examples like David's forgiveness and Saul's transformation into Paul, demonstrating its abundant presence in sin-ridden situations.
Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, beautifully articulates the surpassing riches of God’s grace: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, … not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). This grace, freely given and undeserved, is the foundation upon which our faith rests. Yet, God’s grace extends far beyond salvation. It sustains us in times of trial, strengthens us in moments of weakness, and empowers us to live lives that honour Him. When we encounter impossible obstacles, we can echo the words of Zechariah: "What are you, O great mountain?" God's grace is crucial in overcoming adversity, as it provides hope and strength. As believers, we must never underestimate its importance, as it serves as our lifeline and source of hope. We should embrace it with humility and gratitude, as without it, we are nothing.
