FOCUS OF THE FUTURE
Genesis 13:14-15 – “The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had left him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are standing, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants forever.”
What you focus on determines your reality. God told Abraham to envision the great expanse, knowing that this principle, if adhered to, would enable him to realise all that God had purposed for him. God is not a man who jokes with words; what He says is what He is determined to do. If we look in the direction we are instructed to, then His plan for us is unveiled. In the animal and plant kingdoms, plants grow up for the simple reason that they face the direction of the sun; the chameleon changes and assumes the colour of the object in the environment on which it is focusing. We are the products of who or what we focus on, and the direction in which we look determines our final destination. This principle operates in every realm: spiritual and physical.
In 2 Corinthians 3:16–18, when we turn to the Lord, something incredible happens to us. 1 John 1:1–3 informs us that we become what we look at. Isaiah rebuked the children of Israel for making idols in their imaginations (Isaiah 45:16). Acts 9:6 refers to the Apostle Paul's encounter on his way to Damascus, and standing before King Agrippa many years later, Paul's life and experiences could not shake off that encounter but had been completely shaped by that vision (Acts 26:19). Our performance, attitude, and excellence in life are dependent on our perception and vision. We must visualise the Lord Jesus Christ in all we do, who functioned by that same principle while on earth (John 5:19).
