THE GOD OF FAITHFULNESS
Psalm 119:89 – “Forever, O Lord, your word is settled in heaven [standing firm and unchangeable].”
God does not decide to be faithful on a whim or because it seems like the right thing to do. The first thing we must understand when thinking about God’s faithfulness is that He is faithful to His Name, Character, and Word. The faithfulness of God is deeply rooted and is manifested in who He is. God is very concerned about the reputation of His name. Psalm 106:8 says, “Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his mighty power known.” God’s name reveals who He is, and He is consistent with His name as an expression of His reputation. Hence, He will not allow His reputation to be at stake in anything He does.
The faithfulness of God is evident in His unwavering commitment to His character. What is the character of God? One of the most powerful words to describe God’s character is the Hebrew word “Hesed”, which is often translated as “steadfast love”. Deuteronomy 9:6 reads, “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.” This verse and others connect God’s faithfulness to His loving-kindness, revealing that God is filled with compassion. If God remains true to His character, we can rely on His faithfulness, and because of His love for us, He will ensure that we do not miss His purpose.
